Description

Nui Barrier is an engineered plywood panel designed as an attractive walling system that provides an effective noise barrier and also blocks out unsightly views.

Application

  • Freeway Sound Barrier Panel
  • Noise Barrier Panelling
  • Retaining Wall

Structural Construction

Manufactured from plantation grown resources, Nui barrier is an engineered panel that performs to the Australian and New Zealand Standard, AS/NZS 2269 Structural; with “C” grade face and back veneers, an "A" marine bond and an F14 Stress Grade. Due to the strength and thickness of the panels, supported benches and hanging garden pots can be attached to the wall.

Enduring Profile

Nui Barrier is manufactured with an attractive rippled profile or with a roughsawn/textured and grooved profile, designed to control climatic weathering that may occur over time.

Design Freedom

Steel, timber or concrete posts may be used. Panels are usually installed horizontally therefore requiring less posts. Nui Barrier can be used for many types of wall designs. The structural integrity and cross dimensional stability of the panel allows other materials to be used in conjunction to enhance designs. Glass & acrylic panels, timber battens and steel panels are examples.

Quality Assured

Nui Barrier is manufactured in accordance with the independent quality control program audited by the EWPAA who have international accreditation for such service.

Sound Transmission Class (STC)

Results would not be dissimilar to tests carried out by the Australian National Acoustic laboratories on similar products.

For example:

  • Nui Barrier 24mm 14kg/m2 – STC26*
  • Nui Barrier 27mm 14kg/m2 – STC26*
  • Nui Barrier 33mm 18kg/m2 – STC27*

Sheet Size: 2400 x 1200
Thickness: 33mm

Jointing

A tongue & groove joining system is used to couple panel edges, giving a strong warp resistant structure.

Treatment

Nui Barrier can be ACQ preservative treated to H3 or H4 (ground contact) against insect attack and fungal decay.

Paint Finishing

The application of paint is strongly recommended. While the effect of weathering over the years will not affect the structural integrity of the Nui Barrier panels, the constant movement of the wood fibre will cause surface "checks" (cracks and splits) unless the surface is sealed. Sealing the surface will protect the wood fibre from constant movement due to moisture and sunlight and maintain the aesthetics of the natural timber. Consult a paint manufacturer for assistance in the selection of an appropriate paint.

Warranty

PNG Forest Products Ltd. Is prepared to warrant the plywood and the costs of reinstating the plywood, subject to a successful claim.

  • 40 year warranty against glueline failure used in correct application.
  • 25 year warranty if the treated wood products, both H3 and H4, become unserviceable due to termite attack, insect borers or fungal decay.

Disclaimer: Exposure Class H3 is designated as “outside – above ground” – at least 150 mm above soil, 100 mm above paving or 25 mm above protected paving (e.g. verandah).

Exposure Class H4 is designated as “outside – ground contact”.

The corrosion threats to metals in contact with treated timbers are galvanic in nature as opposed to the more commonly understood atmospheric corrosion of metals.

Recommendations: Stainless fasteners, flashings (minimum 304 grade stainless steel) are recommended for use in contact with copper based preservatives ACQ, CCA and CuAz treated material in the following circumstances: coastal areas (within 5 km of the coast); high rainfall areas > 1000mm/year; in buildings with little or no eve overhang; where there are potential moisture traps such as decking and exposed flooring, or where treated flooring is exposed for an extended period during construction.

  • For metal studs and joists apply a prophylactic to contact surfaces to prevent galvanic reactions.
  • Stainless fasteners, flashings, studs and joists (minimum 316 grade stainless steel) are recommended for marine environments.
  • Hot dipped galvanised (minimum 42 microns of zinc coating) are recommended for products treated with copper (ACQ, CCA, CuAz) where 1) the building is protected by a eve overhang of minimum 600mm; 2) average rainfall does not exceed 1000mm; and 3) the building or structure is designed and built to exclude “ moisture traps” both during erection and in subsequent use.

This advice is general and specific information and advice must be sought from suppliers of fasteners, flashings, studs and joists.
